Session 7 : the Hurricane Damage Index (HDI),
A novel metric designed to provide a forward-looking assessment of U.S. hurricane risk. The HDI leverages the IRIS tropical cyclone model, which utilizes an exponential weighting of historical hurricane counts, potential intensity, and tracks to forecast risk over the next five years. By integrating this model with simplified damage functions and consistent exposure assumptions across the continental U.S., the HDI offers an independent measure of evolving hurricane hazard, aiding insurers and policymakers in enhancing preparedness and resilience strategies.
