Catastrophe models were first introduced in the late 1980s in order to quantify the risk of financial loss to portfolios of insured properties. Their main output is a summary of the average annual loss to the portfolio (also known as the ‘expected loss’) and an array of larger loss sizes that are expected to be exceeded at a given annual probability.
