Tom Philp

Director, Maximum Information

Dr Tom Philp previously held the position of Senior Manager in AXA XL’s Science function. His roles within that function included catastrophe model hazard evaluation, building views of natural peril risk, and developing applied science projects with academics and universities. He was also seconded on a part-time basis to Blue Marble Microinsurance in 2017/2018 to act as Head of Climate Risk, where he helped to develop drought and excess rain microinsurance products.

He sits on a number of insurance industry advisory/steering groups, including the Insurance Development Forum’s Risk Modelling Steering Group and the Association of British Insurer’s Climate Risk Group.

He has a PhD in Meteorology from the University of Reading. He was the Insurance Sector Champion for the Sector Engagement Project of the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service between 2015-2017, and regularly speaks at industry and academic events on issues of climate risk and climate change.

He is currently a Research Associate of the Philosophy Department at the London School of Economics. In the past, he has been a Visiting Researcher at the University of Miami/NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division.
