Open Infrastructure in Action
More models. More innovation. More accessible risk insight. This newsletter exemplifies what happens when open infrastructure enables collaboration, insurers, model developers, and platforms working together to solve real-world challenges. From Swiss insurance to offshore wind breakthroughs, here's how the Oasis community is advancing catastrophe modelling.
Baloise Unlocks NatCat Insights with Oasis LMF
Swiss insurer Baloise has integrated Aon's Impact Forecasting models (via the Oasis Loss Modelling Framework) demonstrating a strategic shift toward transparency in catastrophe risk assessment. "We decided to implement Impact Forecasting models into our internal system to enhance our modelling capabilities and provide a more comprehensive assessment of natural catastrophe risks," explains Peter Michailow, Senior Risk Manager at Baloise. "The open-source nature of the Oasis platform and the open-model approach of Impact Forecasting were key factors in our decision-making process."
Baloise orchestrated this multi-partner approach, working sequentially with Guy Carpenter for strategic foundation-building, GEM for specialised seismic expertise, and Aon's Impact Forecasting for expanded catastrophe modeling capabilities. Each partner contributed distinct value at different stages, demonstrating how insurers can leverage diverse expertise while maintaining competitive advantages through transparency and flexibility—creating a template for future risk modelling initiatives in an era of increasing climate uncertainty
Dickie Whitaker, CEO of Oasis Loss Modelling Framework, discusses this partnership with Peter Michailow at Aon's Cat Reveal Conference, check out the full clip on our LinkedIn page.
Why open infrastructure matters
Oasis LMF is an open source catastrophe modelling platform, free to use by anyone. But it's also a community that seeks to unlock and change the world around catastrophe modelling to better understand risk in insurance and beyond. By providing standard data formats like OED, an open platform for developing and deploying models, and full interoperability with other systems, Oasis empowers more people to access sophisticated risk analysis. Models come from sources such as vendors, academics & research groups, all packaged in a standard format. This collaborative approach lowers barriers to adoption, democratises risk understanding, and supports the global effort to increase planning for and resilience to natural disasters.
RenewRisk completes pilot windstorm models for offshire wind farms in the UK and Europe
Renew Risk has successfully released pilot windstorm catastrophe models for offshore wind farms along UK and European coastlines. As Europe enters a more active windstorm phase alongside ageing offshore wind infrastructure, these models provide the granular detail needed to quantify and manage emerging risks with confidence.
Oasis is proud to have supported Renew Risk in this milestone.
